Into the Dream
By Acolyte Electra
August 4, 1995 was the day I entered the dream. I had no idea what to expect, but followed the directions and found myself standing on the deck of a ship in front of the cabin. I had a medium female body with brownish-green looking clothes and a bald head. I clicked around trying to figure out what to do next until I finally clicked on the door of the cabin and got a menu that said "Pass through", so I clicked it and walked through the door.
I was now standing inside the cabin. There was a white parrot sitting silently on a perch and a black chest against the wall. Clicking around again I saw that the chest had an option to "Open" so I selected it. Clicking once more, I saw a "Get from/Tokens" and got the tokens.
There I stood with a gold coin in my hand and staring at a room that was empty, other than the parrot and the chest. There didn't seem to be anything else to do there, so I clicked on the door and chose "Pass through" again. When I got back out on the deck and started clicking some more I found a menu that said "Go that way" with a little box next to it. (The fonts had a problem then and there were no arrows, just little boxes.) I wondered why I hadn't seen that before. It wasn't until later that I found out you had to go into and out of the cabin before it appeared.
I started down the promenade. The first thing I came to was a body machine. I discovered I could choose a different body, a male, but having spent all these years in Real World as a female, it felt more comfortable to remain one so I passed on that.
The next locale in the Promenade had two things, a large gold object which turned out to be an ATM machine and a head vendo. I flipped through the heads offered in the vendo. I really did need something better than this bald one. The only one that even remotely appealed to me was the Asian woman head so I bought it and put it on, stuffing the ugly, bald head into my pocket where I wouldn't have to look at it anymore. I checked the ATM and already had 50T in it which I withdrew and pocketed
Having run out of options in that locale I moved on to the next. There I found a large, open book sitting on a pedestal which allowed me to register a name. I was no longer a number, I was Electra.
In the next locale I found myself facing a set of double, stained glass doors, so I clicked them and walked out, then set out to explore this new found place. The menu had three "Go that way" options now, all with the little boxes next to them and I chose one and ended up going left. I chose the same one the next time and went left again where I found the Vaz Mart. I looked through the vendos but didn't buy anything. I didn't know whether I would need the tokens in my pocket for someting more important.
After exiting from Vaz Mart I continued on, choosing "Go that way" and then trying the doors. Only the Nu Yu was open until I got all the way around to the Visitor's Center. It was a large room with a desk in it. With the next "Go that way" I found myself back out on the street. I had still not seen anyone else, although I was sure there must be someone somewhere. I decided to keep searching.
All of a sudden I found myself at a fountain that I had not seen before. Obviously there was more to the city than I had first thought. I went around and around and around, then realized I was going in circles. I just *knew* I had seen that "East Fountain" before. Oh no!! I was trapped!! I didn't know how I had gotten to the fountain, and I didn't know how to get off!! I finally gave up and went back to the Real World.
The next day I decided to try it again. I re-entered the dreamscape, but to my dismay, found myself still on that dreaded fountain. I had hoped I might land back on the deck of the ship and have a chance to start over. This time, however, I found other avatars!!
Everyone was so friendly, I soon forgot about being stuck there on the fountain. There were lots of people to talk to and no real reason to leave now. Although I suspected that others knew the secret of how to get back to the other part of the city, I didn't want to ask. I knew I would seem very foolish to them if I did.
Around and around I went for the next several days, not ever worrying much about it, making friends and meeting people, until one day I chose a random "Go that way" and found myself standing in front of a door. I had escaped the inescapable fountain!!!
